Thousands of guests gathered at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in Seattle on April 27 and 28 for the 2008 Northwest Foodservice Show. One of the largest tradeshows in the entire Pacific Northwest, the 2008 Northwest Foodservice show featured more than 500 exhibitors, educational seminars, new products available from across the industry and much, much more.
In 2001, Mt. Hood Beverage and Oregon Restaurant Education Foundation (OREF) decided that there was a lack of recognition for operators in the hospitality industry who go above and beyond regular staff training by offering on-going employee training and professional development opportunities. Wanting to remedy that, Mt. Hood Beverage and OREF collaborated, seed money was invested to generate funds, and an endowed scholarship was created. The Mt. Hood Beverage Scholarship was eventually born and awarded for the first time in 2002. Since then, the scholarship has been annually awarded to deserving businesses from all over Oregon.
Bend High School took first place in the management competition at the National ProStart Invitational held April 24-26, 2008 in San Diego, CA. High school students Katelynn Cockrum, Jackie Baird, Jordan Good, and Casey Anderson made up the winning team lead by ProStart teacher Louise Markland. In the culinary competition, South Salem High School’s team took 12th place.
[Wilsonville, OR] - On April 28, more than 1,000 guests enjoyed the fare of some of Oregon's finest food and beverage establishments while raising hundreds of thousands of dollars in the fight against hunger. More than 70 restaurants and 40 breweries and wineries participated in the 21st annual Taste of the Nation Portland event, offering an eclectic array of mouth-watering samples such as asparagus frittata with herb salad and crème fraîche, Dungeness crab beignets, and artisan bread sautéed in foie gras butter with honey. The Oregon Restaurant Association, a local presenting sponsor, was thrilled with the event’s success.

Five ORA members received various awards at the 2008 World Beer Cup held on April 19 in San Diego, CA. Held every two years, brewers from all over the world compete for coveted champion brewery and style awards. This year, more than 600 breweries from 58 countries participated.
On Tuesday, March 18, the Oregon Restaurant Association held its signature One Big Night auction event at the Portland Art Museum. A record number of guests attended the event, making it the largest One Big Night to date.
A record number of students from across Oregon gathered at the Oregon Convention Center on Saturday, February 23 to participate in the ProStart Culinary Championships held by the Oregon Restaurant Association. Over 200 students from 34 high schools assembled to mix, measure, sauté, and answer challenging industry questions in front of 2,500 energized audience members, making this event the largest and most exciting ProStart Competition to date.
