Is
OREF an OLCC-certified provider for alcohol
server training?
Yes! OREF now provides
classes for “first-timers” needing their
initial OLCC alcohol service permit and
special condensed classes for “veterans”
needing to renew their permit.
·
What
do you mean by condensed classes?
OLCC authorizes, specifically
for those seeking to renew their service
permits, a shortened version of their standard
“minimum 4½-hour” server education class.
The condensed class lasts about half as
long, but still includes the OLCC exam required
for your service permit.
·
That’s great! But what are
the costs for either program?
If you work for an Oregon
Restaurant Association (ORA) -member establishment,
you receive a discount price. For employees
of ORA-members, the class is $25. For those
employees of non-member establishments,
the cost is $30. This applies to both initial
and renewal classes.
· How do I find out if I work for an ORA
member business?
First, ask your employer.
He/she probably knows if the establishment
is a member of ORA. If not, the instructors
have member listings and can verify at the
time of your class.
·
We have a number of new employees
starting at my establishment who need alcohol
service permits. Is there any easy way
of getting them to a class and tested?
OREF provides group classes
on-site, either for those seeking their
initial service permit or for renewal service
permits.
Whether for a one-time
class or on a reoccurring basis, OREF is
happy to schedule classes at your site,
at a time most convenient for you, for ten
or more students.
Contact OREF offices and
ask about group classes for alcohol service
education.

·
How
can I find out about the next class in my
area?
OREF updates its schedule
of classes monthly. Information is provided
to your employer through monthly mailings,
but is also available at www.OREFoundation.org.
Or call OREF’s offices,
800-462-0619 or 503-682-4422, between 8
a.m. and 5 p.m. We can tell you the next
class in your area or send you a schedule.
Classes are offered frequently
in Portland, Willamette Valley (Salem, Eugene
and surrounding areas), Central Oregon,
and Southern Oregon.
·
How
do I register for one of the server education
classes?
To make sure we have enough
materials for everyone at each class, we
ask that you simply call OREF and let us
know which class you’ll be attending (or
after hours, simply leave a message with
your name and class date).
If you need to take the
class right away and didn’t call us, feel
free to “drop in”. We can take “walk-ins”
and can take care of class payment at the
door. We want to make it as convenient
as possible for you.
·
Does
the cost of the class include my permit?
The permit will cost you
an additional $23 and is sent directly to
OLCC with your service permit application. Contact your employer for an application.
·
How
do I get my actual OLCC server permit?
Getting your service permit
is a two-step process.
First, you must successfully
complete the exam following your taking
your class. OREF sends your exam to OLCC
for scoring. OLCC will send you a post
card indicating your test score (the post
card is not your service permit).
Second, you must submit
a service application and fee to OLCC.
Once you receive your passing score, ask
your employer for a service permit application
(if you have not already submitted one to
OLCC). You will need to submit the $23
fee along with the service application to
OLCC for your service permit.
If you are not selling
or serving alcohol at the time, OLCC will
give you credit for taking the server class
if you apply for a permit within two years
of the date you passed the exam.

·
I just started my job. How
can I serve alcohol if I don’t already have
a service permit?
You can apply for a temporary
permit by completing a permit application
and submitting it to OLCC. See your employer
about one. The temporary permit is good
for 45 days during which time you should
plan to take an alcohol server education
class and exam.
After you get your test
score post card indicating a passing grade,
OLCC will mail you your service permit separately
(if you have already submitted your service
permit application).
·
So
what’s a passing score for getting a service
permit?
For the initial server
education class, a passing score is 70%.
For the renewal education class, a passing
score is 80%, because it is assumed you
already have some experience with alcohol
service and its associated issues.
With appropriate attention
and consideration during the server education
class, a passing score should not be a major
obstacle. 99% of persons taking the server
education class pass the exam the first
time.
·
I had a service permit several
years ago, but it has expired. Which class
should I take?
First, you should call
the OLCC to see if you qualify
for a Renewal class: 800-452-6522. If you
took and passed the initial server exam
within the past seven years, you can take
the condensed renewal class, and exam.
If it has been longer than seven years or
this is your first time obtaining a service
permit, you should take the full alcohol
server education class.
OREF offers both the renewal
and initial server education classes, and
you can register online from our Alcohol
Server Education page. Or call our office,
800-462-0619 or 503-682-4422 for the next
class nearest you.
Whether you are certain
of your expiration date or not, you should
check with the OLCC (800-452-6522) to make
sure you qualify before you take
the Alcohol Server Renewal Online Course.
