The Oregon ProStart
program was first introduced in 1997, and
features today one of the most closely integrated
partnerships of education and business in
the state. Since then, the ProStart program
has grown by leaps and bounds.
For 2004-2005, Oregon currently has 36 ProStart
programs, and from the program inception to
the fall term 2005, has marked the following
accomplishments:
5,883 students
have gone through the curriculum as of June
2005
1,121students have complemented their
classroom learning with paid work experience/internships
in the restaurant/hospitality industry as
of fall 2005
An average number of 33 schools have
been a part of the program for the past
3 years
65 students have gone on to post-secondary
study and have earned $2,000 scholarships
for completing the program, which equates
to $130,000 in scholarship awards
An additional 10 students have been
awarded a mentored scholarship at the local
level for a total of $20,000 in scholarship
awards
Oregon has the 5th highest National
Certificate of Achievement completion rate
in the US
Taft High School won the
National Culinary Competition in 2002
Bend High School won the National
Management Competition title in 2005
276 students took the National ProStart
exams (Year 1 and 2 combined)
255 students have earned the ProStart
National Certificate of Achievement, which
accounts for a 92% program completion rate
for those students who went the step to
take the exams
This program aligns with Oregon's Certificate
of Advanced Mastery (CAM) - students working
toward a Business Management endorsement
area with an emphasis in hospitality. Most
importantly, ProStart provides links between
school-related learning activities and work-based
learning activities.
Any student who completes both years, passes
both exams, completes the 400 hours of worksite
experience (250 paid at worksite and 150
can be met at school through class and school-related
enterprises) and meets all of the worksite
competencies receives a national certificate
that is recognized by the industry, signifies
that student has met competencies, allows
for more scholarship opportunities and serves
as a jumpstart for careers in the hospitality
industry. Furthermore, students who complete
these requirements, receive the national
certificate and fill out the required paperwork
are eligible to receive a $2,000 scholarship
to attend a post-secondary school to further
their education and career in hospitality
management.
