Is it possible to
give high school students a "real world"
education in two years? Results from OREF's
School to Career program tell us it is.
ProStart is a hospitality education
program that combines school-based learning
and structured on-the-job experience to provide
high quality instruction and unique opportunities
for real-world application of skills. Check
out the State
High School Culinary and Management Championship
annual event.
ProStart prepares
students for the adult working world (click
here for student/school profiles), offering
them on-the-job experiences before they
graduate. Skills learned at the workplace
are reinforced through practical classroom
instruction from specially trained high
school teachers.
In Oregons ProStart
program, students are given a head start
toward exciting and rewarding hospitality
careers, while the hospitality industry
provides worksites and the "real world"
links. Our program accomplishes the following:
- Identifies hospitality
industry needs
- Attracts quality students
to hospitality industry careers
- Integrates standards-driven
curriculum into educational curricula
- Allows students to
participate in relevant work experiences
meeting business needs
- Promotes the hospitality
industry and expands the total workforce
- Gives students scholarship
opportunities
Who oversees Oregon's ProStart
program?
OREF trustees, hospitality
industry volunteers, mentors and educators
