Tillamook County Schools Hospitality Program Students Cook Up Big Hit at Taste of Tillamook

Four students from the ProStart class at Tillamook County Schools Hospitality Program were on hand headlining a culinary demonstration at the Taste of Tillamook culinary event on March 19, 2006.

The future chefs prepared a Dungeness crab pagoda, which is their starter dish for the state culinary championship coming up on April 8, 2006 in Portland. Interested onlookers gathered as the students demonstrated some of their culinary skills under the guidance of instructor Carolyn Nyquist and chef mentor Jonathon Scarper from the Tillamook Shilo Inn restaurant.

Dawn Tryon, state ProStart director at the Oregon Restaurant Education Foundation which is based in Wilsonville, was also on hand and helped emcee the cooking demonstration to event attendees and discussed how ProStart is training the future of the hospitality industry in Oregon.

This county event benefits the Food Security Programs in Tillamook County and marks the continuing partnership between the ProStart program and this community event. In years past, the Tillamook ProStart program has provided culinary demonstrations, and when they have not been able to participate due to the state contest taking place at the same time, the ProStart program has loaned the culinary demonstration area critical equipment to make the other chef demos possible.
