Molly Ziegler, a senior at Bend High School,
won the 2006 Oregon Future Promise Award for
her exemplary record as a student, scholar and
leader in the ProStart program. Currently employed
as a line chef at the Bend Golf and Country
Club, Ziegler maintains a 3.75 grade point average
in addition to participating on the Bend ski
racing and tennis teams. She is planning on
attending the Culinary Institute of America
in Hyde Park, NY to earn her bachelor's degree
in the culinary arts. She is excited about her
current job and often comes into the Bend culinary
classroom bursting with excitement from new
cooking techniques and the knowledge that her
mentors are sharing with her. Her teacher, Louise
Markland, calls Molly one of the most eager
and passionate students she has ever worked
with. Ziegler in turn, credits her teacher for
her her success. "The student of the year
award is really a testimony to teachers' success
in motivating students to take ownership of
their own learning," she said. "By
creating an atmosphere that encourages learning,
good teachers find ways to nurture talent and
help prepare students for life. For me that
partnership in learning with my culinary teacher
has helped me zero in on my dream of attending
culinary school!" Ziegler is on track to
complete the ProStart National Certificate of
Achievement by June 2006, which caps off two
years of study in food service, culinary arts
and hospitality industry management.
Ziegler was on the 2005 Bend High School Management
team which took first place at the Oregon championship,
and went on to win the 2005 National title in
the same competition. This year, Bend High School
swept the 2006 Oregon High School Culinary and
Management Championships, winning both first
place culinary and also first place management,
and will be traveling to Charlotte, North Carolina
for nationals April 29- May 3rd.
