Correction
to last week's e-newsletter
Last week's e-newsletter reported about Curtis
Jackson who was hired by Shari's Restaurant.
In that edition, Curtis' last name was incorrectly
spelled. Our apologies! Thanks again, Curtis,
for being such a great role model for ProStart
students!
News
article talks about mystery shoppers
ProStart students hear about mystery shoppers
all the time. An interesting article in the
Oct. 25th edition of the San Jose "Mercury
News" is a good insight into what this
job entails and what shoppers look for... mainly
good customer service and good presentation
at all levels. Here's the link if you'd like
to read about it and share with your students:

Best Communities for Young People Competition
~ Nominate
Your Community Today!
The Alliance for Youth is leading a national
search for the 100 Best Communities for Young
People. As a partner of the America’s
Promise Alliance, the Coalition for Community
Schools is proud to bring this opportunity to
your attention. The 100 Best campaign will recognize
communities for their innovative approaches
and difference-making efforts in 2007. Communities
that are pursuing community schools strategies
certainly fit into this category.
Applications will be accepted online through
Friday, November 3, 2006 at http://www.americaspromise.org.
There is some deadline flexibility to communities
who might be worried about the tight turnaround
time, but this is a great opportunity for you
to receive national media attention for your
work.
Winners will be announced in late January 2007.

Lesson in Food - ProStart Fundraiser for David
Douglas HS ~ Homecoming Dinner a Big Hit
The annual homecoming Spaghetti Dinner at David
Douglas High School in Portland has become a
rite of passage for students enrolled in the
ProStart program. These high schoolers are involved
in all aspects of event planning and execution,
starting at the beginning of the school year
and working up to the last minute putting together
the menu, making the food, plating and serving
and then finishing with clean-up.
This year's event is taking place on Friday,
October 27th at the David Douglas High School
south building cafeteria, which is located at
1500 SE 135th Avenue, from 5-7pm.
Last year, 320 people were served at this fundraising
dinner, which costs $6 per person general admission,
with special pricing for under 12 and over 65
years old. The proceeds from this event, which
netted nearly $1,200, went towards field trips,
textbooks and scholarships. Additionally, the
funds allow a leadership class to travel to
Disneyworld in Florida and study hospitality
principles, and students experience the industry
first-hand.
A special thanks to the Old Spaghetti Factory,
which is a ProStart sponsor, for also donating
the spaghetti and sauce to the David Douglas
High School event, which they have done for
the past five years.
